Bio

Vic Grout, from Southampton in England, is an experienced futurist/futurologist and technology ethics specialist.  He has degrees in Mathematics and Computing (Exeter, UK) and a PhD in Engineering and Communication (Plymouth, UK).  Before joining ARUCAD he was Professor of Computing Futures at Wrexham Glyndwr University (Wales, UK), having previously held the personal chair of Professor of Network Algorithms and served as Director of the Centre for Applied Internet Research, Head of Computing, Dean of Research and Chair of the Welsh Council of Professors and Heads of Computing.  Over a long and distinguished academic career, he has successfully supervised over 30 international PhD students, held learned society Fellowships across four academic disciplines: Mathematics, Engineering, Computing and Arts; and achieved Chartered status five times over as a Mathematician, Scientist, Engineer, Electrical Engineer and IT Professional, as well as being a Senior Member of both the IEEE and ACM.

Professor Grout researches emerging and future technologies and their wider social, ethical, artistic, legal, political, environmental and economic impacts and influences.  His work has ranged from using smart technology to enable the elderly and disabled to lead longer independent lives, through projects such as automated online age-gating and medical diagnosis, to using artificial intelligence and machine learning for efficient minefield clearance.  He has delivered conference keynotes and invited talks in more than 25 countries and has authored over 300 peer-reviewed academic papers and four books on these various topics.  He advises the European Commission on ethical concerns relating to funded research projects and acts as a consultant for the government research departments of several other countries.  He edits the Turing’s Radiator blog on technological philosophy and appears regularly on radio and TV.  His first science-fiction novel, Conscious, was published in 2017 and his new academic comedy Prometheus for Sale is currently being serialised online.  He is a (very) amateur guitarist in his spare time.
